I was wondering about my sore muscles. For about three months, I’ve worked out at Curves (circuit training for women business) and I NEVER had any soreness but I lost about 20lbs and 20 inches along with a 1500 cal./day diet. Now I’ve switched to workouts at the YMCA and have begun a new routine of elliptical/treadmill time and upper body machine exercises. I am very sore in my arms (and occasionally my legs.) So, is it good that I am sore or is it bad?? I didn’t have any soreness at Curves but lost the inches. My goal is not to bulk up but to tone up and lose about 50lbs. I want to look tone not beefy.

Any traditional martial art discipline will be good for anyone, no matter their age, height, weight, musculature or lack thereof, etc. The point is, the martial arts are for absolutely everyone.
Find a good instructor, a quality school, and a group of good students and they will work with you from the beginning to help you achieve your goals and gain an understanding of the art – whichever one you decide upon. Very few people come to the martial arts already prepared to just “jump right in.” Most have to orient themselves either mentally, spiritually, or physically. Beginner classes are designed just for this purpose.
My best advice to you would be to seek out a quality instructor i.e someone you like, trust, can talk to, and someone who engages you honestly and answers all of your questions sincerely. Once you’ve found such an individual, the dsicipline doesn’t matter so much, as you’ll be spending a lot of time with that instructor.
Once you start, just take your time and be courteous to yourself. Everyone feels a little lost and uncomfotrable when they begin something new, and the martial arts is no exception. Hopefully your instructor will do a good job of making you feel at home. comfortable, and engaged. Before you know it, you’ll be loving it and looking forward to classes.
Good luck on your new martial arts journey
I also want to tone up but I don’t want to bulk up and get all muscley. I am planning on swimming daily as well as a few aerobics sessions a week, will these exercises make me lose weight? P.s I will be eating a healthy low-calorie diet also.

I read an article that said women in sports often suffer injuries because their quad (front of thigh) is much much stronger than the corresponding muscle on the back. I think the exercises I do for my legs also put most of the work on the front of the thigh. I am looking for a good exercise I can do on the backs without any equipment (except ankle weights, I have those). Would love a link! Thanks

You can do lunges and have two <5lb dumbells hanging straight down while doing them. Try out 3 sets of 10-15 reps each. In general you want more reps and less weight. You can also do steps, marches, and jogs while also doing curls with your arms. I'll do those for 20 minutes.
