What Size Free Weights Are Ideal For Women To Start Out With?

I am a woman who does little more than walking for exercise and the exercise I get at work. I do some lifting at work, but not very heavy. I’m looking to begin lifting free weights to help tone up. But I don’t want to get “big” like a bodybuilder.
What size weight do you suggest starting out with? And what is the maximum heaviest I should use?

you wont get big like a bodybuilder because you are a female, you simply dont have the chemical make up to get big. I cant tell you how much weight to lift but i can say grab a pair of weights that you can complete 8-10 reps with, and do those exercises 3-4 times with 8-10reps, when 10 reps becomes too easy move up in weight.
There is no maximum that you should use you must use what you can lift, if you dont you wont get results.
There is no such thing as “toning” all toning is, is a reduction of body fat around the muscles so that you can see the muscles more eaisly.

You wont get “big”. Woman don’t tend to bulk much, and those the do (bodybuilders) work very hard at doing it.
Generally a set of 3 lb through 12 lbs will provide enough resistance for most common workouts. Also, Don’t discount resistance bands!! These DO work! They are cheaper, lighter, and storable. A green and a Red would be the perfect starter set.
