when you do your cardio dont use just heavier weghts, work out with like 2.5 to 10 pounds, this will give you more definition than size, doing weight training try to stay away from the bench press or lat pulls, or the curl bar, you want to try the separate dumbbells, but remember light weight, lifting heavy weights cause muscles to oxidize more which will increase the mass, working with light weights, will burn but you shouldn’t gain too much muscle mass.

Less weight and more reps = strength and tone.
More weight = strength and bulk / large muscles.

Body building myth # 787 : lighter weight x more reps = less bulk -
    PHOOEY!
I’m a PT & spinning instructor, I’m at the gym 7 days a week, I work with 40-50 people at any given time…
Bulk is a function of diet and genetics. It depends on your muscle type and how much you eat. If you are eating less than you need then you will not grow, you will, however, tone-up.
Don’t try to make a cardio workout with your weights, just get a nice, short intense weight routine 3x a week, count your calories and vary your cardio. You’ll get out what you put in.

i was told if you want to tone arms but not gain muscle you should do lighter weights, but more reps. I have been doing this for 2 months now and can tell a difference.

I agree that lighter weights and more reps is the way to go if you are weight training to tone. But, I suggest you do pushups because they tone the whole area: biceps, triceps, shoulder, forearm and even the abs. Do three sets of 15 when you first get up in the morning or do them several times during the day. They take less than a minute per set. I hope this helps.
